Field Experiments on the Benefit of Frankia Inoculation
Earlier field experiments were carried out with fresh nodule homogenates
but later experiments have been done using pure cultures of Frankia. To overcome the limitation in obtaining bulk inoculum because of the slow growing characteristic of Frankia, continuous culturing of Frankia for field experiments with Casuarina have been adopted. Frankia cells have also been entrapped in alginate beads or montmorillonite or kaolite clays and used for inoculation in the field in Senegal on sandy soil deficient in nitrogen with the object of improving the biomass and nitrogen content of Casuarina.
