Care and Maintenance of Biosafety Cabinets

Care and Maintenance of Biosafety Cabinets - The open fronted class I and II cabinets must be sited carefully. They should not be used if persons are moving around in the laboratory because draughts created by persons moving past a cabinet can draw the particles out of the cabinet.

Air from the safety cabinets should not be discharged near ventilations or open windows. Centrifuges and other similar instruments which may produce gross splashes or particles should not be kept in the cabinet as the air flow pattern can not prevent the escape of such gross splashes.

Since air flow within the cabinet can be disturbed by any obstructions, equipments should not be dumped in the cabinets. Cabinets should be disinfected after working with pathogens by wiping the inside walls and floor with a disinfectant. Ultraviolet lights are not recommended for the disinfection of safety cabinets.
