Class I Biosafety Cabinets

Class I Biosafety Cabinets - These cabinets have an open front and are provided with an integral tray to contain spillage and splashes. There is an inward flow of room air at a rate between a.7m/sec and 1m/sec. If particles are liberated within the cabinet, this air flow prevents their escape into the room.

The air inside is removed from the cabinet by a fan. To ensure that no infective material is removed from the cabinet and to prevent the fan being itself contaminated, a HEPA filter is placed in front of the fan. Thus class I cabinets allow unsterilized room air to pass into the cabinet and around the materials within. It sterilizes only the air to be exhausted.
