Genetic Engineering in Biological Control

Genetic Engineering in Biological Control
Genetics has always played an important role in biological control, but the deliberate release of genetically engineered microorganisms is scientifically controversial because of possible undesirable ecological effects.

Transgenic plants have been engineered to increase their defences against microbial pests and pathogens. For example, the genes for phytoalexins, which are produced by varieties of soybean, pea and tomato in response to microbial infections, have been introduced into transgenic plants to protect them against various fungal infections
