Mineralisation of Carbon
Carbon metabolism depends on whether microbes need carbon containing compounds or other nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus or sulphur. Metabolism results in mineralisation. Organic carbon is converted into carbon dioxide and release of inorganic minerals like ammonia, phosphates, sulphates takes place. The obvious sign of mineralisation of carbon is respiration in soil.
