Sources of Carbon Cycle

Sources of Carbon
Carbon dioxide which is predominantly present in air is also found in the
soil and oceans (dissolved CO2)

Most of the earth's carbon is locked up in fossil fuels as carbonates. 10% of CO2 is released through industrial and human activities like burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities and forest clearing and burning. CO2 is also released by soil microbial respiration. gives the sources of carbon.

Table 42.1 Various sources of carbon

Sink

Amount in billions of metric tons

Atmosphere

578 (as of 1700) to 766 (as of 1999)

Soil organic matter

1500 to 1600

Ocean

38,000 to 40,000

Marine sediments and sedimentary rocks

66,000,000 to 100,000,000

Terrestrial plants

The carbon cycle has two parts:

Slaw cycle Here the carbon turnover is measured in 100s and 1000s of years involving weathering of rocks and dissolution of carbonates on land and oceans.

Fast cycle Carbon turnover measured in years or in decades. This is biological in nature. This cycle directly affects and is affected by soil microbes. A schematic representation of the carbon cycle
