Fertility of The Ocean - Planktons, particularly phytoplanktons, are usually referred to as Pasture of the sea. They form the basic group in the food web. Fish, whales and other higher marine forms either directly or indirectly feed on the plankton.
Fertility of the ocean is the term used to express the capacity for the production of organic matter by the marine organisms. Fertility mainly depends upon the production by phytoplankton.
Terrestrial environment produces about 1 to 109 of dry organic matter per square meter per day while that of ocean is about O.5g. However, since the oceanic area is so much larger than the terrestrial area, the total productivity of ocean exceeds that of terrestrial area.
