Ocean and Sea

Ocean and Sea - When compared with other aquatic environments, marine environment is quite distinctive owing to its vast area and volume, low organic content, high salinity, low temperature and great hydrostatic pressure.

For instance, the salt content of seawater ranges from 3.2 to 3.6% and the average depth of sea is around 3,800m. However, due to the greater volume of the marine environment, comparatively less variation in conditions occur than in any other aquatic environs.

The larger volume of the ocean contributes to a greater proportion of the total bacterial population. Oceans contain about 1022 litres of water as there are 107 to 109 bacteria per litre, a significant portion of the world's bacteria (1030) live in the water column of oceans.

A large proportion of the remaining bacteria live in ocean sediments, which covers 70% of the world's surface.
