Thermal Stratification

Thermal Stratification - Biological processes within the lake water are influenced by the physical state of water which in turn is governed by the temperature. For example, at 4°C water has its maximum density.

In lakes, the increase in depth with a corresponding change in the temperature leads to a more or less stable seasonal stratification called thermal stratification.
