Antibiotics Affecting The Cell Wall Peptidoglycan Biosynthesis - One important difference between bacterial and animal cells is that the former have a cell wall. Thus any antibiotic which acts selectively against the cell wall would be able to control bacterial multiplication. Gram positive bacteria have a relatively simple cell envelope consisting of a cell membrane, outside which is the actual cell wall consisting of two main layers, the peptidoglycan layer and the teichoic acid layer (teichuronic acid in some bacteria).
