Chloramphenicol- Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic which inhibits the growth of both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It is chiefly a bacteriostatic agent. Certain serious side effects have limited its use as a general antibacterial agent, and its chief clinical use is in the treatment of typhoid fever.
Chloramphenicol inhibits transpeptidation by inhibiting the functional attachment of the aminoacyl end of AA-tRNA to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It may also have a direct inhibitory effect on peptidyl transferase. Chloramphenicol inhibits peptide bond formation and termination.
