Cycloheximide - This inhibitor of protein biosynthesis specifically inhibits 80S ribosome function without affecting 70S ribosomes. It is thus an inhibitor of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. It has no effect on mitochondrial protein synthesis.
It interferes with chain initiation and inhibits translocation. It is commonly used as an inhibitor of protein synthesis in eukaryote cells. Its effect is reversible. Cycloheximide also inhibits other metabolic steps, such as synthesis of DNA, DNA dependent RNA polymerase I and tyrosine hydroxylase activity.
