Drugs Affecting The Cell Membrane - The older antibacterial compounds such as H202, the halogens, the hypochlorites, and gaseous sterilants like ethylene oxide and ozone show considerable reactivity with various groups on, or in, the bacterium. Some of these compounds are still used-as disinfectants, but the role of antibiotics bas been taken over by two main groups of compounds, the phenols and the cationic antiseptics. The primary effect of these compounds is on the cytoplasmic membrane.
