Edeine - The two basic polypeptide antibiotics edeine A and edeine B are, produced by Bacillus brevis Vm4. Edeine inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis, but not RNA synthesis in intact bacteria. It is, however, a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis in bacterial cell free extracts.
At high Mg++ concentration it inhibits binding of AA-tRNA and fMet-tRNA to the , p-site. It is thus complementary to tetracycline which inhibits the A-site at high Mg++ concentration. Edeine inhibits both A and P-sites at lower Mg++ concentration. It inhibits AA-tRNA-30S subunit binding almost completely at low and high MgH concentration. Edeine binds to both 30S and 50S subunits and stabilizes their association.
