Phosphonomycin -Phosphonomycin inhibits the first step in peptidoglycan synthesis, namely the condensation of uridine-diphospho-N-acetyl glucosamine with phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP) by means of a transferase to yield the intermediate compound. This subsequently yields uridine diphospho-N-acetyl muramic acid on reduction. Phosphonomycin is effective against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria, and appears to have small toxicity.
