Computer in Bacterial Identification

In recent years, the computer has been used as an aid in grouping bacteria and classifying them with a great degree of precision. Bacteria are identified by conventional methods using morphological, biochemical and serological tests. The problem arises in comparing a large number of characters as in the case of numerical taxonomy or the Adansonian approach. To overcome these difficulties the computers are used for estimating the differentiating power of the tests as welt as for estimating the overall similarity with known organisms.

The computer's speed and memory allows it to rapidly consider many possible species in the identification process by comparing the properties of an unidentified organisms with those in the computer store. The use of computer minimizes the possibility of error in identification due to infrequent occurrence of an organism or the occurrence of a more common organism with, superficial resemblance to other organisms. Several computer systems for bacteriology have now been developed and bacteriological laboratories in large hospitals and industries have begun to utilize computer facilities for processing test results
