Pathogenicity of Bacteria

Certain bacteria are pathogenic to plants or animals. However, many pathogens attack only specific hosts and sometimes only specific loci of the host. Hence, pathogenicity tests are sometimes used for the identification of pathogenic bacteria. When a specific toxin is involved in the mechanism of pathogenicity, animal pathogenesis tests are conducted by the use of specific neutralizing antisera so as to identify the pathogenic organism with a high degree of specificity.

For example, the final identification of a diptheria bacillus may be made by injecting the material intradermally into two guinea pigs, one of which has been protected with a prior injection of diphtheria antitoxin, and the other is partially protected with a small dose of antitoxin. The development of an inflammatory and necrotic skin reaction in the partially protected animal identifies the culture as an organism producing diptheria toxin.
