Obligate Autotrophs

Obligate Autotrophs-Obligate autotrophs are organisms which fix CO2 as their major source of carbon through the Calvin-Benson cycle, and which use inorganic chemicals as their sources of energy or as electron donors (if photosynthetic). It should be noted, however, that all autotrophs can use organic compounds such as acetate as acetate secondary sources of carbon.

Rittenberg (1969, 1972) contends that absolute dependence on a CO2-based carbon metabolism does not exist. Bacteria can obtain at least some carbon from other sources. They might even dispense with CO2 as the major source of carbon if a suitable mixture of organic compounds is available.
