Chromaticeae - The ability to obtain reducing equivalents from organic matter was probably first developed by the Chromatiaceae, the purple sulphur bacteria. This released them from dependence on sulphides, and converted them into the ancestral forms of the Rhodospirillaceae, the purple non sulphur bacteria.
