Assimilation
As mentioned previously strand displacement is promoted by new synthesis. After cleavage of the D loop the displaced strand can be assimilated. Assimilation is promoted by Exonuclease a that can act on either ssDNA or dsDNA and bring about degradation at the 5' terminus. Only one of the two molecules forms heteroduplex DNA.
