RNA-RNA Interactions

RNA-RNA Interactions - There is interaction between the different types of ribosomal RNA, and between ribosomal RNA and other types of cellular RNA(messenger RNA and transfer RNA).

5s rRNA-tRNA interaction. As mentioned previously, 58 rRNA forms a specific complex with proteins L5, Lt8 and L25 of the 50S ribosomal subunit.

This 58 rRNA-protein complex binds to the G- T, ψ-C sequence present in loop IV of tRNA.

It has been Suggested that this binding takes place through a complementary C-A-A-G sequence on 58 rRNA.

Thus 58rRNA has an important role in binding aminoacyl tRNA to the A-site.

16S rRNA-tRNA interaction. 168 rRNA also provides a binding site for tRNA.

16S rRNA-mRNA interaction. The role of 168 rRNA in the function of the 305 subunit was established by8hine and Dalgarno (1974).

A 7 -nucleotide poly pyrimidine sequence at the 3' end of 168 rRNA was found to have. a complementary polypurine sequence in R17 phage mRNA.

This polypurine sequence preceds the initiation. codon AUG.

Ribosomal binding sites for all known mRNA molecules contain a sequence of 3-7 polypurine nucleotides preceding the initiation codon.

This sequence is complementary with a polypyrimidine stretch in 168 rRNA.

23S rRNA-5S rRNA interaction. Nucleotides 72-83 of 5S rRNA have been found to be complementary to a 12-nucleotidesequence at the 3' proximal part of 238 rRNA (Herr and Noller, 1975).

238 rRNA also shows base complementary between its two ends. A 7-nucleotide segment near the 3' end is complementary to 7 bases at the 5' end.
