Col Plasmids

Col Plasmids - Bacteriocins are protein antibiotics produced by bacteria. They are lethal to other bacteria of the same genus or related genus.

Certain strains of E. coli synthesize bacteriocins (colicins) which are active against other enteric bacteria. This colicin synthesis is specified by plasmids.

There are two groups of Col plasmids, conjugative plasmids (1-3 copies in each cell) and non-conjugative plasmids (10-30 copies per cell).
