Protein 2 - Protein 2 is closely related to the matrix proteins, having a similar molecular weight and tight association with peptidoglycan.

It, however, represents a completely different polypeptide than the matrix proteins. It has been suggested that protein 2 may be coded by a proph­age gene, and may function in surface exclusion of super-infecting phage.
