Division II Bacteria

Tabular Form of Bacterial Classification From David Bergey's Manual

This division includes the bacteria which are unicellular and characterized by the growth habit and specific planes of division and cell separation. Cell division is generally binary but occasionally may be unequal. Budding cells may remain attached after division resulting in various arrangements. In liquid environment, they may exhibit motility and possess flagella. Some move by gliding, snapping or darting movements some surface of solid media. Some produce dormant endospores while a few others produce arthrospores and cysts.

Except in a few, cells are contained in a rigid or semi-rigid cell wall structure which gives a constant form. Peptidoglycan forms the major component of the cell wall, whenever present. Members which are photosynthetic, do so only under anaerobic conditions and use electron donors other than water and do not produce oxygen during photosynthesis. They do not contain chlorophyiis a or phycobilic proteins but have three or four types of bacterial chlorophylls. Chemosynthetic members may be aerobic, anaerobic or facultative
