Gram Positive Cocci

Tabular Form of Bacterial Classification From David Bergey's Manual

This part includes bacteria which are characterized by spherical cells, aerobic and/or facultatively anaerobic and anaerobic bacteria. This part includes three families, Micrococcaceae, Streptococcaceae, and Peptococcaceae. The family Micrococcaceae has bacteria which are spherical 0.5-3.5 µm in diameter and which divide in one or more planes to form regular or irregular clusters,or packets. Motile or non-motile, aerobic or facultatively anaerobic.

Chemoorganotrophs with respiratory or fermentative metabolism. Nutritional requirements vary but all strains grow in the presence of 5 percent NaCl. G + C content of the DNA ranges from 30-75 moles per cent. The family consists of three genera Micrococcus, Staphylococcus and Planococcus

The micrococci are common inhabitants of soil, freshwater, and the skin of man and other animals. Members of the genus Staphylococcus grow in the presence of 15 per cent NaCl or 40 per cent bile and are mainly associated with skin, skin glands, or mucus membranes of warm blooded animals.

Their host range is wide and many strains are potential pathogens. Members of the genus Planococcus are strict aerobes found in sea water but grow equally well either in sea water medium or media without added salts. The family Streptococcaceae has bacteria which are spherical or ovoid, in pairs or chains of varying length or in tetrads. Non-motile or rarely motile with complex nutritional requirement. Facultatively anaerobic with G + C constant varying from 33-44 moles per cent.

The family Peptococcaceac has cells varying in diameter from 0.5-2.5 µm are anaerobic, chemoorganotrophic with complex nutritional requirements. Found in mouth, the intestine and the respirator tract of man and other animals. Also. found frequently is normal and pathological human female uro genital tracts. Sometimes found in soil and on the surface of cereal grains. This family has four genera namely Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus. Ruminococcus and Sarcina.
