Cells occur within a sheath which may be attached to submerged plants or stones
Sheaths mayor may not be encrusted with iron or manganese oxides. G + C content of DNA varies between 69.5 to 70 moles per cent. This group contains seven genera of which Sphaerotilus and Leptothrix are important
