This group contains bacteria which are Gram negative, aerobic, single, rod-shaped cells, strict aerobes either motile or non motile. when motile they have a polar or sub polar flagella. Cells occur within a sheath which may be attached to submerged plants or stones

Sheaths mayor may not be encrusted with iron or manganese oxides. G + C content of DNA varies between 69.5 to 70 moles per cent. This group contains seven genera of which Sphaerotilus and Leptothrix are important
