Genetic Symbols of Lambda λ Phage Genome
-

1. Genes nul, A, W, B, C, nu3, D, E, Fr and PII code for DNA maturation and phage head proteins.

2. Genes Z, U, V, G, T, H, 208, 11, L, K, I and J code for phage tail proteins.

3. b2, b515 and b519 are deletions for a nonessential region of phage DNA.

4. altp - site for integration of phage chromosome into host DNA.

5. int - integration and excision of phage DNA into and from host DNA

6. zis - excision of phage DNA from host DNA.

7. del - inhibits growth in P2 lysogens.

8. exo - codes for exonuclease (phage homologous recombination function),

9. bet - codes for protein beta (phage homologous recombination function).

10. gam - ;codes for gamma protein, which inhibits host exonuclease V. Allows phage growth in recA- hosts.

11. kil - responsible for killing host. Kills induced lysogens.

12. cIII - product needed for synthesis of cI and int gene products. Activates cre.

13. ral - alleviates B, K restriction.

14. tL - terminates left operon transcription.

15. N - antiterminator for tL," tRI and tR2. Product extends transcription from PL and PR through tL, tRI, and tR2.

16. PL - leftward promoter. Promotes transcription initiation from N through int.

17. OL - leftward operator. Operator site for repressor binding. Consists of 3 subsites, OLl, OL2 and OL3.

18. rex - inhibits growth of phage T4 rII.

19. cI - codes for immunity repressor.

20. prm  - promoter for repressor maintenance.

21. PR - rightward promoter. Initiates transcription from cro through O regions.

22. OR - rightward operator site for repressor binding. Consists of 3 subsites, OR1, OR2 and OR3.

23. cro - depresses. transcription from PL and PR, and indirectly inhibits repressor synthesis.

24. tRI - rho-sensitive transcription termination signal.

25. cY -site for action nf CI and cIII for repressor synthesis.

26. cre - controller for repressor establishment.

27. eII -product needed for synthesis of cI and int gene products.

28. ori - origin for bidirectional DNA synthesis.

29. PO - promoter for replication-related transcription and possibly for repressor establishment.

30. O, P - control phage DNA replication.,

31. tR2 - rho-sensitive transcription termination site.

genes S to J from PR' promoter.

33. PR - promoter for late transcription.

34. tR3 -terminator neutralized by the Q gene product.

35. S - product shuts off phage DNA synthesis and affects the host membrane.

36. R - codes for phage endolysin, an endopeptidase.

37. cos - 12 nucleotide long complementary single-stranded ends of the DNA molecule.
