Phages -
The coliphage lambda is an example of lysogenic or temperate phages which normally do not kill their host, although they are capable of doing so. The lambdoid group of phages have three properties in common:
(i) They recombine when intercrossed,
(ii) their DNA has indentical cohesive ends and
(iii) induction of prophages can be brought, about by
ultra violet light
Examples of the lambdoid group of phages are A, 21, (1)80, (1)81. 82, 424 and 434. Anotlher group of temperate phages, which includes P2
(i) fail to recombine with lambda,
(ii) possess cohesive ends, of a second class and
(iii) are not inducible by ultra violet irradiation.
