Morphology of Lambda λ

Morphology of Lambda λ
-
The lambda phage particles are half protein and, half DNA. The head is icosahedral in shape, and about 55 um in diameter.

The capsid consists of between 300 and 600 subunits of molecular weight 37,500.

The subunits appear to be arranged in clusters ,of 5 and 6 subunits, the pentons and the hexons: respectively. The head appears to consist of more than one type of subunit.

It is joined to the tail by, ahead tail connector. This consists of a 'narrow' (led, portion which passes through 11 hole in the capsid, and expands into a knob inside.

The tail is a flexible tube about 130 nm long. It ends III a terminal fibre 25nm long, which appears to determine host range. The tail consists of about 35 stacked discs or annli.

It is a simple structure, and lacks the tail sheath of the T -even phages.
