Attatchment of the Phage to the Bacterial Cell

Attatchment of the Phage to the Bacterial Cell
- Attachment of the phage to the bacterial cell occurs at the tip of one of the six F-pili of male cells by means of the A protein. Recent work has cast doubts as to whether phage particles bound to the tip of the pili lead to productive infection.

It has been suggested that the phage receptor may be located in the inner membrane of the bacterial cell, where it is masked in intact P- cells but revealed in F+ cells, perhaps by the shedding of the F pilus.
