Core Tube and Sheath of Phage T4

Core Tube and Sheath of Phage T4
-

The core tube is composed of subunits of gp19. It is formed by the polymerization of gp19 on the baseplate. The tail sheath is formed by 144 copies of gp18. Ritgs of this protein are laid down around the core tube. gp3 and gp15 are finally added to the completed tail. gp3 acts on the core to stabilize the sheath. gp15 forms the head tail connector.

This is an extension of the core tube, and appears in the form of a small protusion. The union of the bead and tail take place spontaneously, and does not require any additional factors. Tail fibres need not be present for joining of head, and tail.
