Maturation of Infective Progeny

Maturation of Infective Progeny
- A pool of phage DNA and protein molecules accumlates in the bacterial cell. These molecules are now withdrawn from the pool at random and assembled into phage particles.

The T4 bacteriophage has about 120 genes. In addition there are other  functions whose genes have not been apped. About 50 genes are involved in morphogenesis. The process of assembly of the phage from its components is calico maturation.

The assembly of protein molecules to form the phage particles takes place in a well defined order. The head tail and tail fibres are formed and completed independently, and then only do they combine.
