According to the 'headful' encapsidation model, the capsid is formed first and then DNA is brought inside the head. Replicated phage DNA is present in the form of multiple unit length molecules called concatemers.
This overlength DNA molecule is packaged into the developing head to form prohead III. Prohead III is half filled with DNA gpl6 and gp17 are required for the formation
or prohead III 16- and 17- mutants are unable to fill their heads with DNA.
