Proteins of øX174

Proteins of øX174
- The product of the A gene is concerned with replication of the phage by introducing single stranded breaks in DNA (RF). The products of genes B, C and D are concerned with the synthesis and packaging of progeny ssDNA.

The E gene product is concerned with bacterial cell lysis. The E - mutants are defective in cell lysis, but otherwise produce normal progeny.

The J gene protein is an internal protein. The F gene protein is the major capsid protein and accounts for most of the mass of the particle. The G and H gene products have been ascribed to the spikes. The F and G proteins form an equimolar complex consisting of five molecules of each type of protein.

It has been suggested that they form the unit of which the capsid is constructed. The H gene protein is concerned with adsorption to the host cell. It may also function as a pilot protein, and assist DNA in penetrating the bacterial cell wall.
