Bioremediation
In many instances, indigenous microflora have been enriched or bioaugmented by adding nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilizers to soil or liming and aeration (bioventing) for degradation of petroleum wastes or oil spills. This method of enhancing the activity of native soil microflora currently in vogue using sophisticated engineering devises was earlier known under the name land fanning. Not all bioremediation experiments have been successful but in one instance in U.S.A, success was achieved in a field contaminated with 1.9 million litres of kerosene by bioventing and addition of fertilizers.
