Fungicides
Chemicals used to control fungi that cause plant disease are generally regarded as fungicides. Historically these compounds are based on sulphur, copper and mercury compounds. These inorganic fungicides, have been largely replaced in recent years by organic fungicides: The first organic fungicide was discovered in 1931 under the namethiram followed by zineb and captan in 1943 and 1949, respectively. One generally accepted theory of the fungicides action of metal containing organic fungicides (copper, mercury, cadmium etc.) is the formation of chelates in fungal cells followed by disruption of protein synthesis.
