Simazine and Atrazine
These are examples of widely used 5-triazine herbicides. The triazines are 6-member rings containing 3 nitrogens (tri = 3 and azine = a nitrogen containing ring). The triazines are applied to soil primarily for their postemergence action through inhibition of photosynthesis. The microorganisms capable of degrading the two triazines belong to the genera Aspergillus, Rhizopus, Fusarium, Penicillium and Trichoderma.
