Informational Macromolecules

Informational Macromolecules-Informational macromolecules include the nucleic acids and proteins. The nucleic acids are of two types. (i) Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and (ii) Ribonucleic acid (RNA). These molecules are very large in size and on hydrolysis yield nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a sugar, phosphate and a nitrogenous base which may be a purine or a pyrimidine

The sugar found in DNA is deoxyribose while in RNA it is ribose. Both molecules contain adenine and guanine (purines) and the pyrimidine cytosine. Generally, thymine is found only in DNA and uracil in RNA, although now there is evidence to show that a part of thymine in DNA can be replaced by uracil without any serious consequences. Also, some of the bases in DNA or RNA may be found modified as for example.

methyladenine, methylcytosine, xanthosine, pseudouracil found in the bacterial and eucaryotic DNA.

In both DNA and RNA, the nucleotides are linked to one another through 3', 5’-phosphodiester bridges . Thus, the two ends of the chain have different end groups. The sugar phosphate chain in the same in every DNA or RNA molecule but the sequence of bases and the length of the chain varies
