Proteins

Proteins - Proteins like nucleic acids, are large molecular weight components consisting of 20 different amino acids. The primary structure of the protein, i.e. the sequence of the amino acids is determined by the sequence of nucleotides in the m-RNA which is in turn determined by the sequence of nucleotides in the DNA.

Proteins therefore, represent the information that has been released from the nucleic acids and serve a variety of functions in cells and organisms. Most proteins are enzymes i.e. they are biological catalysts and are therefore involved in cellular metabolism, growth differentiation and reproduction.
