Slow Sand Filters

A typical slow sand filter consists of a 3m deep tank which is open at the top. The area of the tank varies with the amount of water to be treated and usually a few tens to several hundred square meters. An underdrain system called the filter bottom is placed at the bottom of the tank.

It collects the filtered water and takes it to the storage tank through a main collecting channel. In addition the ungraded fine sand of 0.3 to 1.6mm size which is free from clay or loam. The filter bed has a total thickness of about I to l.2m above which the water to be treated stands to a height of about I to 1.5m.

The slow sand filter has a number of influent and effluent lines. These lines are fitted with valves and control devices to maintain the level of raw water and the filtration rate constant. Floating algae and other wastes may accumulate at the water surface as a Scum during filtration. To remove this scum outlets can be provided at the comers of the tank.
