Food contaminated by some microorganisms and their secondary metabolites, when ingested can cause gastrointestinal disorders in man and animals. Generally, "food poisoning" is a term applied to illness caused both by the ingestion of toxins elaborated by the organism as well as those resulting from the infection of the host through the intestinal tract. A correct classification of food borne diseases as suggested by F.L. Bryan in 1976. According to this, all food borne diseases are classified either as "poisonings" or "infections".
