Random Mutations Vs Directed Mutations

Random Mutations Vs Directed Mutations
-

It is usually stated that mutations occur in a random manner. By this it is meant that they are not directed according to the requirements of the organism.

Thus mutations take place in the Darwinian sense and not in the Lamarckian.

The Lamarckian theory holds that changes in the organism are brought about as a result of conscious want on the part of the organism in response to environmental conditions.

According to this theory mutations would have to be directed towards some objective

According to Neo Darwinism, mutations are random. It should be noted that a unicellular organism is more subjected to environmental effects, since it is at the same time a somatic and a germ cell.

In multicellular organisms the germ cells are distinct cells, and are relatively protected from the environment.
