Duplication of Gene

Duplication of Gene - Genes are segments of the DNA molecule. It therefore follows that the genes will undergo duplication when the DNA molecule replicates.

This takes place during the interphase preceeding mitosis. The two strands of the DNA double helix separate from each other.

To each strand are attached nucleotides that were present in the former partner (complementary pairing). In this way two identical double strands of DNA are formed.

In sexually reproducing forms all the cells in the body have been ultimately derived from the zygote, and therefore normally have identical gene sets.
