It was formerly believed that a gene coding the synthesis of a particular polypeptide had a continuous sequence of nucleotides.

Among the first reports indicating that the DNA sequence coding for a polypeptide is not present continuously were provided by the 'hexon' gene of adenovirus and the ovalbumin gene of chickens.
