Sex Determination in Plants
Most flowering plants are monoecious and, therefore, have no sex chromosomes. The plant cells possess bipotentiality and develop both types of reproductive organs without fail. Well known examples of dioecious plants are usually under the genetic control of single gene locus. However, chromosomal sexuality has been reported in some plant species namely Melandrium and Spaerocarpos. The Melandrium of pink family (Caryophyllaceae) has XX-XY chromosomal mechanism of sex determination like the man. Here, the pistillate plants are XX and staminate plants are XV. The sex determination, mechanisms of some of the plants which are dioecious can be tabulated in following table 18°2.
