Gametogenesis and Fertilization
The gametogenesis (Gr., gamos-marriag, genesis-origin) is the process of gamete formation in the sexually reproducing organisms and the union of gametes is called fertilization. The gametogenesis and sporogenesis both include basically the meiosis of the germinal cells of gonads or sporangia, respectively. In plants, one or more mitotic divisions are required to produce reproductive spores, whereeas in animals the meiotic products develop directly into gametes through growth and/or differentiation. Because animals and plants fundamentally differ in the manner of sex cell or spore formation and fertilization, therefore, they demand separate discussion.
