Deceleration Phase in Growth of Microorganism

Deceleration Phase in Growth of Microorganism - After 50 hours incubation the volume of cells would be greater than that of the whole earth, as a result of exponential growth. This cannot occur in practice and growth must be stopped. culture therefore enters the deceleration phase during which specific growth rate declines.

This decline is generally due to accumulation of toxic metabolic products or changing environmental conditions, as reduced etc. In yeasts, growth stops as the ethanol level reaches 10%. Thus wine not be prepared with an alcoholic content much above 14%. During deceleration phase, cells often begin to produce secondary metabolites many of which are of industrial value, as antibiotics.
