Nitrogen and Sulphur Requirement of Microorganisms

Nitrogen and Sulphur Requirement of Microorganism -Nitrogen and sulphur axe taken up as NO3 and S04 by most organisms and are subsequently reduced within the cell and utilized in other biosynthetic processes. Some organisms can also use reduced inorganic nitrogen (such as ammonium salts) directly.

The nitrogen and sulphur requirements of most organisms can also be met by organic nutrients that contain these two elements in reduced organic combinations such as amino acids. A few organisms can reduce elemental nitrogen to ammonia and this process of nitrogen assimilation is known as biological nitrogen fixation.
