Autodestructive Immune Reactions Initiated by Antibody

The inflmmatory process provides an important mechanism by which the immune system mediates host defence. ImIl1unologlcal reactions are of major importance in the protection of the host from, disease-producing organisms. Unfortunately, not all immunological reactions are beneficial, and certain reactions are frequently observed to cause a variety of pathological effects. Also, the normal belief that animals are immunologically tolerant to selfantigens is not an absolute feature of the immune system.

The response in which an individual forms antibodies against his own antigens is referred to as an  autoimmune response. Frequently, autoimmune responses give rise to pathological conditions that are known as the autoimmune diseases. The adverse- immunological reactions which lead to functional important of vital organs are mediated by antibodies or cells.
