Coombs Antoglobulin Test
This is a refinement of the simple agglutination test, and is used when anti-red blood cell antibodies -attach to red cells, but do not agglutinate. Agglutination is induced by the use of an antibody (Coombs serum antiimmunoglobulin to human immunoglobulin prepared in goats or rabbits). This antiimmunoglobulin reacts with the bound antibody and brings about agglutination of the cells. This test is of value in the detection of anti-red blood cell antibodies associated with such syndromes as haemolytic disease of the new born (erythroblastosis fetalis).
